Halifax, NS – Nineteen-year-old Drew Dalziel is about to embark on a journey she won’t soon forget. As one of four Atlantic Canadian youth, she will represent Prince Edward Island as part of a ten day tour to Honduras from July seventh to seventeeth. Organized by the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) and the Falls Brook Centre (FBC), the Global Youth Leaders Tour is an opportunity for young Atlantic Canadians to increase their understanding of international cooperation and discover how they can have an impact.
In Honduras, Drew will meet with other youth, staff and volunteers from local organizations, and community members to learn more about the work being done in partnership with Atlantic Canadian organizations and their international colleagues. Drew has always had an interest in international development, largely due to her curiosity about other cultures and her work with the organization International Sustainable Community Assistance (ISCA) in PEI. She is particularly interested in youth related issues, and recognizes that youth in Canada (herself included) are afforded many opportunities. As such, Drew hopes to make a positive impact on the communities she visits in Honduras, as well as relaying what she learns back to Canadian youth to inspire their engagement on international cooperation.
During the tour, Drew may also be seen squeezing in a soccer game with some other inspiring youth to build connections and enhance cultural communication! “I want to do the Global Youth Leaders Tour in Honduras because I want to be able to learn a new culture and a better understanding in different communities other than my own. Also connect with new people I meet along the way,” says Drew.
The four youth participants will film their journey and develop a short documentary of their experience upon returning home. They will then share their experiences with students and organizations in the Atlantic region through presentations this fall and winter, hoping to encourage other young people to become involved in their local and international community.
